EPA - Just do it !
If you’re not quite sure what an EPA is and how you should work with EPAs in your daily clinical training, then you landed on the right page!

In these videos, you will learn about the EPA concept and how we can put it into practice in our daily work. We hope that you get started with this concept and realize that the benefits far outweigh the burden of introducing something new, both for the learner and the teacher!

You will see that the EPA concept puts into explicit words what you are already doing: Assessing a trainee’s daily performance and giving targeted feedback. What is new, however, is that the individual assessments turn into a visible learning curve over time and show the trainee’s strengths and areas of improvement.

We did 4 different instructive videos in four hospitals representing Switzerland’s four linguistic regions (English captions are available under ). We show you the inner structure of an EPA, how we make entrustment decisions and the assessment tools you can use. Last but not least, you will see a Competence Committee at work.

We hope you enjoy it!

Video 1 (08:24) - EPA in a nutshell

This video presents you with the basics of EPA (definition, structure, and content) and illustrates it with an EPA from anesthesiology at the hospital of Chur.
Video 2 (08:48) - Evaluation modalities for EPAS

Why and how to evaluate an EPA in the daily clinical is what you will discover in this video, illustrated with a short example from the hospital of Laufenburg.
Video 3 (07:57) - Entrustment modalities

In this video, you will learn about the entrustment process and the entrustment scale. A feedback discussion at the hospital of Locarno shows you how entrustment is integrated into a formative discussion.
Video 4 (05:54) - Entrustment committee

To fully harness all the potential of EPAs and competency-based education, you proceed to a summative evaluation of each of the EPAs. This is done by a competency committee. This video shows you how such a committee replaces the habitual informal judgment advantageously and how it can be conducted.
